These are rare visitors to this country from Scandinavia, similar to the common crossbills, but slightly bigger and with a deeper call. There was a flock of about 20 birds feeding on conifer seeds and drinking from puddles. The males are very red orange in colour, while the females are pale green, but there are variations as seen in these images.
